MANOKWARI – Class IIB Manokwari Correctional Facility continues to show its commitment to the development of prisoners, this time through cultural arts training with a focus on traditional Papuan music.
The activity, which was held in the field of the prison, was enthusiastically welcomed by the prisoners, who were given the opportunity to learn and play a variety of traditional Papuan musical instruments. (18/09/2024)
Kalapas Manokwari, Sudarno was also present to accompany the implementation of this activity, providing direction and motivation to prisoners.
“This traditional music coaching program is not just about preserving cultural heritage, but also as a means to develop self-potential and strengthen solidarity among the prisoners,” said Sudarno.
In this coaching, the prisoners are introduced to various traditional Papuan musical instruments, such as tifa, stringed instruments, and several other instruments that are distinctive in producing unique tones from local culture such as the traditional bass stand played by FK, he has been playing instruments since elementary school in numfor.
In addition to gaining historical knowledge and how to play it, the prisoners also directly practiced playing the musical instrument, both individually and in groups.
Kalapas Manokwari emphasized that this activity not only aims to provide skills, but also has a positive impact on the mental and social well-being of the prisoners.
“We want them to feel pride in their own local culture. Traditional music is an effective medium to foster love for culture and strengthen mutual respect among people,” he explained.
This art coaching is part of the self-development program that is routinely implemented at Manokwari Correctional Facility. Each prisoner is encouraged to actively participate in various educational and recreational activities.
This participation, according to Kalapas, can accelerate their social recovery process so that they are ready to return to society with better skills and attitudes.
“We hope this program will continue and grow. We want to equip them with skills and instill positive values that they can bring back to their social environment,” added the Kalapas before closing the event.
With the full support and active participation of the prisoners, this traditional music coaching activity ran smoothly.
