PAPUA – The Central Papua Provincial Government together with the Nabire Regency Government held a cheap market to commemorate World Food Day, as well as an effort to control the inflation rate in Central Papua Province.
The cheap market activity was held in Lagari Jaya Village, Makimi District, Nabire Regency. Acting Governor of Central Papua Ribka Haluk said, this is a Cheap Food Movement or abbreviated as GMP. GMP is one of the government’s efforts to stabilize food supply and prices in terms of controlling the inflation rate in Central Papua Province.
According to Ribka, the level of economic needs of people in the Central Papua region is getting higher, accompanied by the price of nine basic commodities (Sembako) in the market experiencing significant inflation, so that the rate of extreme poverty is an attention for the government.
“People’s purchasing power has decreased because the price of basic necessities in the market has increased. This can also make people unable to buy to meet family needs,” said Ribka.
Therefore, she explained that the Central Papua Provincial Government and Nabire Regency Government conducted cheap market activities in several districts in Nabire Regency so that basic food prices could remain stable.
“That is the task of the government, so I hope we remain compact with the provincial and district governments, so that prices do not increase,” she hoped.
In addition, the provincial government also provides nutritious food intake for children under the age of 0-2 years.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Papua Province Office of Perindagkop, UMKM and Naker, Norbertus Mote, said that the government continues to strive to provide opportunities for people to come and shop at cheap markets because the prices given are far different from the prices in the market in general.
In addition, cheap market activities are expected to tackle inflation and reduce the burden on the community, and can also be implemented in villages in other districts.
“The government must carry it out (also) in other places so that people get low prices. Because the price of basic necessities in every market has gone up,” said Mote.
After opening the cheap market activities, the Central Papua Provincial Government and Nabire Regency Government also distributed free groceries to underprivileged residents.
