In a significant development for Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to foster peace and unity in its easternmost regions, Yeremias Foumair, a prominent leader of the Free Papua Movement (Organisasi Papua Merdeka, OPM) in the Sorong Raya area, has officially renounced separatism and pledged allegiance to the Republic of Indonesia. This event marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey towards resolving longstanding conflicts in Papua.

The Free Papua Movement and the Sorong Raya Region

The Free Papua Movement (OPM) has been a central figure in the struggle for Papuan independence since the 1960s. The movement emerged in response to the controversial integration of West Papua into Indonesia, a process marred by disputes over the legitimacy of the 1969 Act of Free Choice. Over the decades, OPM has engaged in both political advocacy and armed resistance, leading to a protracted conflict with the Indonesian government.

Sorong Raya, located in the newly established province of Southwest Papua, encompasses several regencies, including Sorong City, Sorong Regency, South Sorong Regency, Maybrat Regency, Tambrauw Regency, and Raja Ampat Regency. This region has been a focal point of OPM activities, with various factions operating in the dense forests and rugged terrains.

The Surrender of Yeremias Foumair

On May 15, 2025, Yeremias Foumair, formerly the commander of the Ayosami Battalion under OPM’s Kodap IV Sorong Raya, formally surrendered to Indonesian authorities. The ceremony took place in Fuog Village, South Aifat District, Maybrat Regency, Southwest Papua. In a symbolic gesture of reconciliation, Yeremias kissed the Indonesian flag and signed a pledge of loyalty to the Republic. The event was witnessed by military officials, local government representatives, community leaders, and his family members.

Yeremias cited his longing for family and the realization that armed struggle leads only to fear and suffering as his reasons for returning. “I now realize that violence does not bring about change,” he stated, expressing his desire to live peacefully and contribute to the development of his community.

Before Yeremias Foumair, 30 former members of the OPM in the Sorong Raya region, led by Manfret Fatem, had surrendered and pledged allegiance to the Government of Indonesia on May 13, 2025. The oath of loyalty ceremony for these 30 former OPM members was held at the Aimasa Post of Task Force Infantry Battalion 133/YS, in Aimasa Village, Central East Aifat District, Maybrat Regency, on May 14, 2025.

Government’s Response and Reconciliation Efforts

The Indonesian government, through its military and police forces, has been actively engaging with communities in Papua to promote peace and discourage involvement in separatist activities. Colonel Syawaludin Abuhasan, Head of Information for Kodam XVIII/Kasuari, emphasized that the government welcomes all individuals willing to abandon separatism and reintegrate into society.

The surrender of Yeremias is seen as a testament to the effectiveness of the government’s persuasive and humanitarian approach in addressing separatist movements. By focusing on dialogue, community development, and respect for local customs, authorities aim to foster a sense of belonging and national unity among Papuans.

Implications for Peace and Development in Papua

Yeremias’s return is part of a broader trend of former OPM members choosing to reintegrate into Indonesian society. This shift highlights the potential for reconciliation and unity through dialogue and community engagement. As more individuals follow this path, it is hoped that lasting peace and development will be achieved in Papua.

The government’s commitment to infrastructure development, education, and healthcare in the region is crucial for addressing the root causes of discontent. By improving living conditions and providing opportunities for economic growth, authorities aim to reduce the appeal of separatist ideologies.

Conclusion

The surrender of Yeremias Foumair represents a significant step towards resolving the longstanding conflict in Papua. It underscores the importance of dialogue, empathy, and inclusive development in fostering national unity. As Indonesia continues its efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Papua, the reintegration of former separatists like Yeremias serves as a beacon of hope for a harmonious future.
