BIAK – The Biak Numfor Regency Government continues to prepare strategic steps to develop the potential of the Cenderawasih Bay Region through the “Blue Economy for Papuan Prosperity” program.

The program aims to maximize natural resources based on fisheries and marine tourism to encourage community welfare and economic growth in the region.

Acting Secretary of Biak Numfor, Zakarias Mailoa, emphasized the importance of implementing this program.

“Blue economy is the key to the sustainable development of Papua, especially in the Cenderawasih Bay region. With a thematic, holistic, and affirmation-based approach, we are optimistic that the huge potential in the fisheries and marine tourism sectors can be managed to improve people’s lives,” he said.

One of the steps proposed by the Biak Numfor Regency Government is the optimization of transportation connectivity in the region.

This includes the reopening of the Garuda Biak-Jayapura flight route which has been closed since October 2024, as well as the initiation of a new Biak-Sorong route.

“Ideal transportation is a key requirement to support the development of the region’s potential.”

“Without good accessibility, the blue economy program will not run optimally,” Zakarias added.

The Biak Numfor Regency Government also encourages the revitalization of Frans Kaisiepo Airport as one of the oldest airports in Indonesia.

This step includes the construction of a new terminal and the establishment of the airport as a center for the maintenance, repair and operation of narrow body aircraft.

In addition, the development of the fisheries industry area and the construction of Biak Water Front City are prioritized to strengthen the blue economy sector.

“Frans Kaisiepo Airport will be the main gateway in supporting economic activity, tourism and logistics in the region. This revitalization is not only for Biak, but to support the overall connectivity of Papua,” Zakarias explained.

The local government is also planning the implementation of several major events, such as Sail Teluk Cenderawasih 2025-2026 and Ocean Race 2027.
