In a concerted effort to combat plastic pollution, State Electricity Company (PT PLN) and the Papua provincial government have launched a series of initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste in Jayapura. These initiatives coincide with the global observance of World Environment Day 2025, themed “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

Community Engagement through the “Bottle Up” Campaign

From June 2 to 11, 2025, PLN’s Papua and West Papua Regional Office spearheaded the “Bottle Up” campaign, focusing on collecting used plastic bottles across five locations in Jayapura. The initiative was part of PLN’s Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility program, “Zero Waste Warriors.” Participating sites included PLN’s office, SD Negeri Kotaraja, SMP YPKP Santo Paulus Abepura, and two points along Pantai Hamadi. The collected bottles were sorted and repurposed, contributing to a circular economy model. A notable collaboration with Rumah Bakau community resulted in the collection of 52 kilograms of plastic waste, which was subsequently handed over to the Jayapura City Government’s Waste Bank for recycling into valuable products.

Government’s Commitment to Plastic Waste Management

Echoing PLN’s efforts, Dr. Yunus Wonda, the Regent of Jayapura, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing plastic pollution. During a joint ceremony marking World Environment Day, Wonda urged all stakeholders—including government agencies, businesses, and the public—to unite in combating plastic waste. He highlighted that such initiatives align with Jayapura’s vision of creating a safe, comfortable, independent, and just region, with a focus on preserving Lake Sentani and the Cycloop Nature Reserve. The ceremony concluded with a collective pledge to cease plastic pollution for a healthier future.

PLN’s Broader Environmental Initiatives

PLN’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond the “Bottle Up” campaign. In a separate initiative, PLN’s Maluku and Papua Development Unit (UIP MPA) successfully collected 18 tons of waste during a clean-up operation in Jayapura. This effort underscores PLN’s role not only as a national electricity provider but also as an agent of change dedicated to responsible business practices with positive environmental and social impacts.

Moving Forward

The collaborative efforts of PLN and the Papua provincial government signify a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. By engaging communities, promoting recycling, and fostering partnerships, these initiatives aim to reduce plastic waste and inspire broader environmental consciousness across the region. As the campaign progresses, the hope is to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility that extends from individual actions to collective impact.

Conclusion

The joint efforts between PLN and the Papua provincial government mark a significant step toward addressing the growing issue of plastic pollution in Jayapura. Through community-driven campaigns like “Bottle Up,” extensive clean-up operations, and strong governmental support, these initiatives demonstrate a powerful model of environmental responsibility and collaboration. The programs not only reduce plastic waste but also foster awareness, community participation, and sustainable habits. If maintained and expanded, these actions can set a precedent for broader environmental reforms across Indonesia.
