PT PGN LNG Indonesia, as part of the Gas Subholding of PT Pertamina (Persero), has officially joined the development of a gasification project in Papua.
The project is intended to strengthen the natural gas supply chain through the development of LNG infrastructure for power plants in the northern part of Papua.
“This gasification project is a concrete manifestation of realizing the 2060 net zero emission target. PGN LNG Indonesia has the opportunity to contribute to providing LNG as clean energy which has an important role as a transitional energy for reducing carbon emissions in Indonesia,” said PGN LNG Indonesia President Director Nofrizal.
The Papua gasification project will support the operation of seven main power plants with a total capacity of 168 MW. The project also requires an average gas supply of 20.83 BBTUD over the next 20 years.
The LNG infrastructure development will be carried out by a consortium of companies consisting of PT Pertamina International Shipping, PT PGN LNG Indonesia, PT Enviromate Technology International and PT APCA Tirta Engineering, which are members of the Papua Bersama Consortium. Projects are spread across Jayapura, Biak, Manokwari and Nabire.
Papua Bersama Consortium is an initiative formed with the aim of enhancing cooperation between various parties for development in Papua.
The formation of the consortium is also driven by the support of various parties, both central and local governments, as well as international institutions that encourage inclusive development in Papua. Overall, Papua Bersama Consortium aims to be a platform for collaboration, coordination, and innovation to encourage sustainable gas infrastructure development.
“PGN LNG Indonesia supports efforts to improve the reliability of energy supply as well as national energy security,” Nofrizal said.
Meanwhile, PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara said that the strategic cooperation was an important step to ensure a more stable and sustainable energy supply in northern Papua.
Existing gas supplies can also be optimized to meet national gas needs. “This project is not only about building gas infrastructure, but also about building strong synergy between various parties to ensure the security of energy supply in this strategic region. With the signing of the joint development agreement (JDA), we are confident that the next steps such as design, funding and construction will run faster,” Iwan said.
