Papua, as one of the provinces in Indonesia that has extraordinary natural and cultural wealth, also faces challenges in terms of education and literacy. Reading interest and the existence of libraries are important factors in efforts to improve the quality of education in this area. This article will discuss the condition of reading interest in Papua and the role of libraries in improving community literacy.

Reading interest in Papua is still a big challenge. Based on data from UNESCO, the literacy rate in Papua is among the lowest in Indonesia. Some factors influencing the low interest in reading in Papua include limited access to reading materials, lack of educational infrastructure, and geographical challenges.

Access to reading materials in Papua is very limited. In many rural areas, bookstores or libraries are rare. Even in big cities like Jayapura, the availability of quality books is still inadequate. This makes it difficult for children and the general public to get decent reading material.

Lack of education infrastructure is also a hindering factor. Schools in Papua often lack basic facilities such as textbooks, school libraries, and adequate teaching staff. In addition, geographical challenges such as poor road conditions and long distances between settlements make book distribution difficult.

Libraries have a very important role in improving reading interest and literacy in Papua. Libraries are not only places to borrow books but also learning centers and communities that support the development of knowledge.

One initiative that has been undertaken is the mobile library. This library uses vehicles such as cars or motorbikes to bring books to hard-to-reach areas. With the mobile library, children in rural Papua can get access to various reading materials that were previously difficult to obtain.

The use of technology is also a solution to overcome limited access to books in Papua. Digital libraries allow people to access various books and reading materials online. Although internet infrastructure challenges still exist, digital libraries can be a promising alternative, especially in areas that already have internet access.

Communities and volunteers also play an important role in increasing interest in reading in Papua. Many communities are engaged in literacy campaigns and have established mini-libraries in various regions. These volunteers not only bring books but also organize reading activities, book discussions, and literacy training for the community.

Support from the government and non-governmental organizations is needed to strengthen literacy improvement efforts. The government can increase the budget for education and literacy and build more libraries in remote areas. NGOs can help with book donations, training programs, and mobile library initiatives.

Reading interest in Papua still faces many challenges, but with various efforts and initiatives, there is hope to improve literacy in this area. Libraries, both conventional and digital, as well as support from communities, volunteers, government, and non-government organizations, play an important role in providing access to reading materials and building a reading culture in Papua. With good cooperation, it is hoped that Papuans can have better access to education and knowledge, thereby improving their quality of life.
