South Papua, known for its natural and cultural richness, is now preparing to face a big challenge in Indonesian sports. The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) of South Papua has shown great commitment and enthusiasm for the 21st National Sports Week (PON) to be held in Aceh and Medan in 2024.
KONI South Papua’s preparations for PON 21 began in early 2023. Various strategic steps have been taken to ensure athletes get the best training and adequate facilities. Chairman of KONI South Papua, Dr. Richard Mandey, emphasized that the preparations this time are more planned and structured than previous events.
“We have mapped the potential of athletes in various sports, from athletics, and swimming, to traditional sports that are the mainstay of South Papua. Intensive training programs are already underway, and we are also working with various parties to bring in national and international class coaches,” said Dr. Richard.
In addition to focusing on athlete training, KONI South Papua is also investing in sports infrastructure and facilities. Several new sports facilities have been built, while old ones are being updated to meet national standards. Jayapura’s Mandala Stadium, which is one of the sporting icons in Papua, has been renovated and equipped with modern equipment.
“We want to ensure that athletes have adequate facilities and infrastructure to hone their skills. In addition, good facilities are also important to create a conducive training atmosphere and support the mental and physical development of athletes,” added Dr. Richard.
The success of PON 21 preparation cannot be separated from the support of the local government and the people of South Papua. The Governor of South Papua, Lukas Enembe, has paid special attention to sports development in the region. He stated that sport is not only about competition, but also about building character and regional pride.
“The local government will continue to support KONI’s efforts in preparing athletes for PON 21. We hope that, through sports, we can strengthen our unity and pride as South Papuans. This is also an opportunity to show the whole of Indonesia that South Papua has great potential in the field of sports,” said Governor Lukas.
KONI South Papua set ambitious targets for PON 21. They hope to win medals in various sports and improve South Papua’s ranking in the national arena. Dr. Richard Mandey stated that this target is not impossible with careful preparation and the fighting spirit of the athletes.
“We believe that with hard work and support from various parties, we can achieve the targets that have been set. Every athlete has great potential to excel, and we will continue to give our best to support them,” he said.
PON 21 Aceh Medan 2024 is a very important event for South Papua. It is an opportunity to showcase the best talents and abilities of the athletes, as well as introduce the rich culture of South Papua to the rest of Indonesia.
