The Papua hailstorm that struck highland communities in Puncak and Lanny Jaya has turned an unusual weather phenomenon into a serious humanitarian and food security concern. Because temperatures generally decrease with altitude, the ice particles have a greater chance of remaining frozen as they descend. In lower and warmer areas, they are more likely to melt before reaching the surface.
