SORONG – The Cultural Art Performance of Southwest Papua Province was officially opened on Friday (27/12/2024) night at Mariat Hotel, Sorong City. The event aims to preserve local cultural traditions while encouraging creative economic development in the region.
The performance, which lasts for three days until December 29, 2024, presents a variety of traditional arts and local creative works.
Head of the Education and Culture Office of Southwest Papua Province, Adolof Kambuaya, emphasized the importance of cultural preservation through activities like this. According to him, art and culture are valuable heritage that must be preserved for future generations.
“Culture is a system of actions that is passed down from generation to generation. If managed well, culture will not only survive but also have a tremendous economic impact,” said Adolof.
Adolof also highlighted the role of art in enhancing people’s creativity and innovation. The art studios featured in this performance are considered to have made a real contribution to the local economy.
As a strategic step, the Southwest Papua Provincial government plans to build a cultural center that will serve as a place to preserve local arts and culture, including Melanesian culture.
“We do not yet have an open space for this activity in Sorong City. However, the government continues to look for suitable land to become the cultural center of Southwest Papua,” Adolof added.
The Cultural Art Performance was the first since the establishment of Southwest Papua Province. Various art performances from various regions showcase the uniqueness and richness of local cultures that have been less exposed. Adolof hopes that this event will become a routine agenda that can revive the spirit of local culture.
He is optimistic that through artistic innovation, Southwest Papua can become more dynamic and creative.
“Hopefully, this performance can become a new milestone in cultural preservation while encouraging the growth of the creative economy of the people of Southwest Papua,” he concluded.
During its three-day implementation, this event presents a variety of traditional dances, regional music, and local handicrafts that are the main attraction.
This Cultural Arts Performance is not only a place to preserve tradition but also an important momentum to spur the development of the creative economy in Southwest Papua.
