The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program in Jayapura, Papua, is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing children’s health and education. Launched by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) in collaboration with the Jayapura City Government, this program provides free nutritious meals to students across various educational levels.

Program Overview

The MBG program was officially launched on March 18, 2025, targeting three schools and one early childhood education center (PAUD/TK) in the Abepura District of Jayapura City. The initial beneficiaries included PAUD/TK Juru Selamat Kotaraja, SD Inpres Kotaraja, SD Negeri Kota Jayapura, and SD VIM 1 Kotaraja, reaching a total of 1,912 students.

The meals provided are designed to be nutritious and appealing to children, featuring items such as eggs, biscuits, oranges, and nutribrain milk. This initiative aligns with the national agenda set by President Prabowo, emphasizing the importance of child nutrition in educational settings.

Community Engagement

A key aspect of the MBG program is community involvement. The BGN has emphasized that the program opens avenues for community participation, encouraging local stakeholders to contribute to its success. This collaborative approach ensures that the program is tailored to the specific needs of the Jayapura community.

Expansion Plans

The program is set to expand its reach within Jayapura. The BGN plans to inaugurate additional MBG kitchens, including one in Kampung Harapan, Jayapura Regency, under the Teker Harapan Papua Foundation. Furthermore, the MBG program is extending its services to higher educational levels. The Service Unit for Nutrition Fulfilment (SPPG) in the Abepura District has announced plans to include SMKN 2 Jayapura, a vocational high school, in the program.

Government Support

Jayapura’s Mayor, Abisai Rollo, has expressed strong support for the MBG program, urging all parties to back this national initiative. He highlighted the program’s alignment with national goals and its potential to positively impact the city’s youth over the next five years.

Conclusion

The MBG program in Jayapura represents a concerted effort to improve child nutrition and educational outcomes. Through community involvement and government support, the program aims to create a sustainable model for child welfare that can be replicated in other regions.
