The cultural richness of the people living in Central Papua can be seen from the large number of tribes that exist. The various cultures inherent in these tribes include traditional clothing, traditional food and drinks, traditional dances, traditional songs, and even traditional languages used in the daily activities of indigenous peoples who are members of the tribe. The culture of the tribes in Central Papua needs to be promoted. The main goal is to introduce the wider community to the culture that exists and is still being preserved by each tribe that has that culture. Therefore, in order to promote the culture of the tribes in Central Papua, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports of Central Papua Province held the Amungme Kamoro Local Cultural Festival.
Holding a cultural festival is a real manifestation of the regional government’s concern for paying attention to indigenous peoples, especially members of the tribe who live in the Central Papua Province. The Amungme Kamoro Local Cultural Festival will be held on June 24, 2024 and will run for one week until July 1, 2024. The cultural festival will be held at the Former Pasar Swadaya Timika Field. The main purpose of the Amungme Kamoro Local Cultural Festival is to promote the culture in Central Papua Province. The names Amungme and Kamoro are the names of two indigenous tribes that have lived in Central Papua since ancient times. Therefore, the two names of the tribes are immortalized as the names of the local cultural festival.
For one week, the cultural festival has a series of cultural events. The involvement of indigenous people, tribal members, and also art studios is shown in the festival. Cultural stands are opened with the aim of introducing the culture of each stand guard to visitors. The various cultures displayed include creative artwork in the form of handicrafts and traditional dances, then there are also culinary stands that introduce typical foods from the tribes in Central Papua.
The promotion of local culture is carried out to introduce the culture in Central Papua Province to the general public as visitors. In addition, there is another goal related to how to preserve local culture through copyright registration so that the culture remains original and has been officially registered with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. The copyright registration process can also make the existing culture officially maintain its authenticity and also record that the culture does exist and is owned by the tribes in Central Papua Province.
The hope of holding the Amungme Kamoro Local Cultural Festival in Central Papua Province is how indigenous people, especially members of the tribes who still hold tightly to their respective cultures, feel cared for by the local government. The form of attention that is expected is the availability of facilities that can be accessed to preserve the culture that is owned and also how to jointly maintain the existing culture so that it does not become extinct over time by officially registering for copyright and maintaining its originality.
