Jayapura City Government Encourages Women to Participate in Political, Legal, Social and Economic Fields

JAYAPURA, PAPUA – The Jayapura City Government, Papua is encouraging Jayapura women to participate in politics but also law, social and economic sectors.

According to Obed Kambuaya, the activities carried out by the Jayapura City Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning Office are strategic steps in an effort to increase women’s participation in various aspects, “Because women’s empowerment is also one of the pillars in regional development,” he said Expert Staff of Jayapura Mayor Aser Obed Kambuaya.

Obed Kambuaya explained that in the political sphere, women’s involvement is very important so this is a concern so that through this activity it is hoped that women in Jayapura City can be motivated to get involved in politics.

The Jayapura City Office of Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning held a socialization on the role of women in politics in Jayapura City.

Head of the Jayapura City Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning Office, Betty Puy in her report said, the purpose of the socialization was to provide motivation to Papuan women to play a role and participate, in the political, legal, social and economic fields, “With the Special Autonomy Law Number 2 of 2021, it is necessary to have women’s representation in the Regional People’s Representative Council from customary delegates,” Betty Puy said.

Betty Puy said that as a representative of the Government who is concerned about the women’s sector, she wants to encourage women’s representation through the District People’s Representative Council which is currently in process, “We want women’s representation through the District People’s Representative Council, from all traditional villages in this city,” said Betty Puy.

This activity took place in 5 districts with a target of 400 people who will follow the socialization combined from the 5 districts, it invited competent speakers ranging from:

  1. Chairman of the Papuan People’s Assembly,
  2. Chairman of the Port Numbay Customary Consultative Body,
  3. Head of the Jayapura City National and Political Unity Agency.

“So this socialization was carried out in 5 districts throughout Jayapura city which began with Abepura District as the opening of the whole activity, with participants from Enggros Village and Nafri Village, for the presence of the Chairperson of the Papuan People’s Assembly and the Chairperson of the Customary Consultative Body is expected, can encourage women in the election of the District People’s Representative Council, as well as the role of traditional leaders for customary women,” he said.
