Timika – Central Papua Province will certainly participate in 14 sports (Sports) at PON XXI Aceh North Sumatra which will be held in September 2024. Deputy Chairman 1 KONI Central Papua Cessar Avianto Tunya in a press conference on Jalan Hasanudin Timika, said Central Papua will only participate in 14 sports from 28 that will be competed.
As for the number of athletes as many as 51 people consisting of a quota given by the Central KONI of 24 out of 28 people plus 27 athletes who passed the qualifying round. “We have made an inauguration by Acting Governor Ribka Haluk, then athletes have been confirmed to participate in PON later,” he said.
He revealed, for 14 sports that will be followed by Central Papua including Aeromodeling, Paramotor, Kite Flying, Athletics, Bodybuilding, Billiards, Chess, Pencak Silat, Jujitsu, Muaythai, Rock Climbing, Taekwondo, Boxing and Men’s Rugby.
“We have conducted training camps in Timika and some have also conducted TC in Subang, Aeromodelling in Semarang, Muaythai in Surabaya, Taekwondo Surabaya and Jakarta,” he said.
The Central Papua contingent is estimated at 123 people including coaches and officials not including the health team and others.
For the departure schedule, he continued, it will be carried out in stages, the first of which is Paramotor Sports on August 26, 2024, which has to leave in Aceh. “For sports competing in Medan, the average schedule is September 6 and the opening is September 8 in Aceh,” he said.
For the target itself, he emphasized that because it was the first time participating in PON, his party could not target exactly how many medals would be won. “If we get gold, thank God and we hope athletes try and fight to get gold. But there are several sports that have the potential to win gold,” he said.
