Additional Seats, Acting Governor Submits DPRP and DPRK Membership Selection Documents

JAYAPURA, PAPUA – The Papua Provincial Government launched and submitted working documents for the selection of membership of the Papuan People’s Representative Council (DPRP) and DPRK through the appointment mechanism, for the period 2024-2029. Attending this event, Acting Governor of Papua Muhammad Ridwan Rumasukun and leaders of Regional Apparatus Organizations of Papua Province, Head of the Regional Secretariat Government Section, Head of the Legal Section of the Regional Secretariat of City Districts throughout Papua Province at SwissBell Hotel in Jayapura City, Wednesday, (26/6/2024).

Acting Governor of Papua, Dr. Muhammad Ridwan Rumasukun in his remarks said that with the enactment of Law Number 2 of 2021 concerning the second amendment to Law Number 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy for Papua Province and Government Regulation Number 106 of 2001 concerning Institutional Implementation of the Papua Special Autonomy Policy, it regulates the guarantee of the political rights of Indigenous Papuans. In these provisions, continued the Pj Governor, there are additional DPRD seats which are carried out through an appointment mechanism from the OAP element. “Not only DPRP seats, but also the addition of DPRK seats in both districts and cities which is a new agenda in six provinces in Papua,” said Ridwan Rumasukun.

Article 32 to Article 84 of Government Regulation Number 106 of 2021 has regulated the mechanism and procedures for filling the membership of the DPRP and DPRK appointed from Indigenous Papuans based on the distribution of tribes, sub-tribes and customary and cultural units in existing customary areas. “Government Regulation Number 106 of 2021 has mandated that the mechanism for the seat of appointment of DPRK members in the city regency is regulated by a Governor Regulation,” said Ridwan Rumasukun.

To follow up on Government Regulation No. 106 of 2021, Papua Governor Regulation No. 43 of 2024 has been issued as a legal basis in order to conduct a selection of appointments, which is one quarter of the number of DPRK members from the 2024 legislative general election. For this reason, Ridwan Rumasukun hopes that all Regents and Mayors in Papua Province will immediately carry out the stages of filling the DPRK membership in the Regency and City which has begun with the formation and determination of the Election Committee with the Decree of the Governor of Papua. “Today we are launching as well as submitting working documents so that the Regency / City Panpil can immediately carry out the selection stage of the candidate committee,” he said.
