West Papua Provincial Forestry Service Policy for Reforestation Programs

The West Papua Provincial Government has a policy to manage the budget to carry out reforestation programs. The core of the reforestation program carried out by the West Papua Provincial Forestry Service is to balance the ecosystem and balance the condition of natural resources that are comparable to the increase in human resources. One of the five reforestation programs implemented is the forest reforestation program. West Papua as one of the provinces that utilizes natural resources for the main income of its people also produces wood that is sold whole or processed into various forms of products. Therefore, there needs to be a policy from the Regional Government through the Forestry Service to be able to provide the best for all people in West Papua Province who depend on the forest for their livelihood.

The preservation of nature in the form of lush forests with well-maintained trees in them is a shared responsibility that must be borne by the Regional Government Organizations spread across all Regencies in West Papua Province. There are approximately seven Regencies that have the authority to implement policies regarding forest reforestation. Starting from Fakfak Regency, Kaimana Regency, Manokwari Regency, South Manokwari Regency, Teluk Wondama Regency, Pegunungan Arfak Regency, and Teluk Bintuni Regency. All of the districts are required to follow the recommendations contained in the forest reforestation policy released by the West Papua Provincial Forestry Service.

The types of trees mentioned in the forest reforestation policy are quite diverse. The main types of trees that need special attention in the policy are trees that produce fruit and also trees whose wood is taken as production materials for the community. Specifically for fruit trees, the Forestry Service received suggestions from the community who in their daily lives do pick fruit as a form of culture and also for daily consumption. In addition to these two types of trees, there are also mangrove trees which are one of the prioritized in the forest reforestation policy. The West Papua Provincial Forestry Service is aware of the importance of rehabilitating mangrove forests which can prevent abrasion on the coastline.

The target for the forest reforestation program listed in the policy produced by the West Papua Provincial Forestry Service reaches approximately 70,000 trees that need to be rehabilitated. The policy-making process does not take long, starting from being proposed in a meeting to then providing a budget that will be used for the needs of policy implementation. The forest reforestation program has become an important program that has been implemented from year to year. The hope of implementing the forest reforestation program policy is to realize the responsibility regarding the Special Autonomy given to all regions in Papua. All resources in Papua, both natural resources and human resources, are utilized as much as possible for the welfare of the community, especially the Papuan Indigenous People. The forest reforestation program must continue to run so that the results of the forest can continue to be useful and of course lead to the welfare of the community who do not forget the balance of the ecosystem between natural resources and human resources.
