First South Papua Governor Debate, People Asked to Make Smart Choices

MERAUKE – The South Papua General Election Commission (KPU) successfully held the first debate of the Governor Candidate pair (Cagub) and Deputy Governor Candidate which was broadcast live by one of the national television from Swiss-belHotel Merauke, Wednesday night (23/10/2024).

The public debate, which is one type of political campaign for the candidate pairs (Paslon) for Governor and Deputy Governor of South Papua in the 2024 simultaneous Pilkada contestation, is a place for socialization, exposure of vision and mission as well as fighting ideas and ideas about development planning in accordance with the RPJMD of South Papua Province as a new autonomous region (DOB).

Monitoring this media, the first debate took place excitingly. Shown arguing, vision-mission and ideas are the four candidate pairs (Paslon), namely candidate number 1 Darius Gewilon Gebze-Yusak Yaluwo, candidate number 2 Nicolaus Kondomo-Baidin Kurita, candidate number 3 Romanus Mbaraka-Albertus Muyak and candidate number 4 Apolo Safanpo-Paskalis Imadawa.

The first open debate for the Governor Candidates was divided into 4 segments, where each candidate for governor presented their program, vision and mission, then answered questions from the moderator or panelists, answering each other and responding to questions from other candidates.

The most interesting moment was when each gubernatorial candidate was given the opportunity to ask questions to the other candidate and refute each other. The last session was for each candidate to give a closing statement inviting the public to vote for them. Furthermore, the second debate for candidates for deputy governor (Cawagub) will be held on November 1, 2024.

Starting from the presentation of the Vision and mission by Cagub Paslon number 1, Darius Gewilon Gebze who delivered a presentation that he and Cawagub Yusak Yaluwo were ready to run a clean and authoritative government (clean and good goverment) if elected Governor and Deputy Governor of South Papua by prioritizing accountability and certainty of sustainable regional development.

“We will improve the quality of education at all levels from early childhood education to higher education by prioritizing local resources in remote areas, improve the quality of public health, develop a populist economy based on regional potential and local wisdom, and build regional transportation infrastructure by opening sea, air and land access in South Papua,” he explained.

Furthermore, Candidate Pair Number 2, Nikolaus Kondomo, who is paired with Cawagub Baidin Kurita, said that South Papua Province is a new autonomous region (DOB) based on the law. Paslon number 2 has a vision that realizes South Papua which stands superior, prosperous and works with the main mission of South Papua standing, South Papua excelling, South Papua Prospering and South Papua Justice.

“The mission is to realize South Papua as a center of industry and tourism by maximizing various potentials and regional advantages to encourage regional economic independence as well as to improve welfare, and reduce unemployment and poverty,” he explained.

“We invite the people of South Papua everywhere to follow the broadcast, listen and pay attention to the vision-mission and programs delivered by each candidate and intelligently choose according to conscience. Accompanied by prayer, may positive things come from all corners of South Papua in the elections so as to give birth to quality leaders,” he concluded.
