TIMIKA, PAPUA TENGAH – PT Freeport Indonesia held a peak event to commemorate World Environment Day 2024 at the Eme Neme Yauware Building, Timika, Friday (5/7/2024). In this event PT Freeport Indonesia collaborated with the Mimika Regency Environment Office. “Today is the culmination of a series of events to commemorate World Environment Day 2024, which is a collaboration between PT Freeport Indonesia and the Mimika Regency Environment Office. Previously, Freeport has conducted various series of commemorations of World Environment Day, which began on May 15 with planting in the Grasberg area, various environmental workshops, various competitions, city clean-up actions and animal releases,” said Vice President Environmental of PT Freeport Indonesia Gesang Setyadi.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s World Environment Day celebration was in line with the theme set by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), namely Resolving the Climate Crisis with Innovation and the Principle of Justice. The event lasted for three days (July 5-7) with various events such as an exhibition of environmentally friendly programs of each division at PT Freeport Indonesia and activities in this event such as:

  1. Eco-friendly vehicle parade,
  2. Coloring competition,
  3. Environmental dance competition,
  4. Food bazaar,
  5. Musical entertainment.

In addition, this activity also resulted in a positive impact felt by MSME players in Timika in the courtyard of the Eme Neme Yauare Building, there were rows of stands occupied by traders, ranging from traders of food, drinks, clothing, and other products.

Zaenal, a meatball seller, occupied one of the booths provided by the committee and was busy serving visitors who lined up at his stall when visited by reporters. According to him, this event has increased his sales turnover, “Since yesterday’s opening, my sales have been busy. Activities like this are very supportive. Many visitors do not bring lunch from home and choose to eat my meatballs,” said Zaenal.

Zaenal said, so far he has been selling around and when there are activities like this it really helps him sell without having to turn around Timika City with a cart. Hence, the owner of Tauri Clothing Workshop, said that the commemoration of World Environment Day had an impact on the sale of his products, “This is good, we can also introduce our products to the public and yesterday we just opened, there were already several who bought,” said Hence.

The SMEs hope that events like this are often done to help improve the economy and where there is a crowd, there is a possibility of buying and selling, “people who are crowded must have the desire to buy something or maybe they are curious about our products, then buy it,” said Martha.
