Batik Papua is a Cultural Heritage and Economic Development

Batik, as a cultural art form rich in creativity and natural resources, has become one of the commodities with the potential to boost the economy in regions such as Papua. The optimization of the batik industry in Papua has been carried out by the Ministry of Industry, in collaboration with stakeholders. Programs such as technical guidance for improving productivity in SMEs and the management of national and international exhibitions have been implemented to promote the development of the batik industry in Papua.

Batik from Papua has received an intellectual property certificate (HKI) from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia, ensuring the quality and uniqueness of the batik produced in Papua. The batik industry in Papua has the potential to improve local economic development, while also becoming a local product with high performance and having a positive impact on the local economy.

In the past decade, the batik industry in Papua has become a center for the sale of batik with motifs from Papua. Small and medium-sized enterprises that market handwritten batik to “printed” batik with good quality have grown. Batik from Papua has penetrated the European market, making the region one of the leading batik producers abroad.

The Jayapura City Government has also supported the development of batik in Papua by involving 140 UMKM OAP and helping local women to continue their batik-making activities.
