New Hope in Mountainous Papua, Discourse on the Expansion of East Yahukimo Regency

The mountainous Papua province is ready to welcome East Yahukimo Regency, a new autonomous region (DOB) that is expected to bring positive changes to local communities. The district will be split from Yahukimo Regency, with plans to cover five major districts in the mountainous Papua province.

The capital of East Yahukimo Regency is planned to be in Seredala District. With an area of approximately 93 km², this area is expected to become a strategic administrative and government center.

Currently, Seredala District has a population of around 27,000 based on 2020 data.The expansion of East Yahukimo Regency includes five districts, each with unique characteristics and potential:

  1. Seredala District: As the future capital, Seredala District has a central role in the administration and development of the region. In addition, the area has great potential in agriculture and livestock.
  2. Wusama District: Famous for its natural wealth, Wusama District has great potential in the forestry and nature tourism sectors. The district’s biodiversity can be an attraction for tourists and researchers.
  3. Nalca District: Nalca is culturally rich. With traditions and customs that are still strong, this district has the potential to become the center of ethnic culture and tourism in East Yahukimo Regency.
  4. Apalapsili District: This district is known for its natural beauty, including charming rivers and mountains. The potential for natural tourism and ecotourism activities can be the mainstay of this district.
  5. Soba District: As a district with fertile land, Soba has the potential to become the center of agriculture in the new district. Superior commodities such as coffee and organic vegetables could become the backbone of the local economy.

The expansion of East Yahukimo Regency is not just an administrative separation, but also an effort to accelerate development and improve the welfare of the community. With the formation of this new district, it is expected that access to public services such as health, education, and infrastructure can be more equitable and affordable.

The proposed expansion received full support from various parties, both from the local community and the government. The active participation of the community in the expansion process shows the high hopes and enthusiasm for a better future.
